Cyrano’s Story

"Cyrano de Bergerac" is a play by Edmond Rostand set in 17th-century France. The story follows Cyrano, a talented poet and duelist known for his wit and bravery, but cursed with a large nose that he is self-conscious about. Despite his outward confidence, Cyrano is in love with Roxane. However, he believes she could never love him because of his appearance.

Roxane, meanwhile, confesses to Cyrano that she has fallen in love with a handsome but intellectually challenged cadet named Christian. Wanting to help Roxane, Cyrano agrees to help Christian woo her by ghostwriting letters and speaking eloquently on Christian's behalf. This leads to a series of romantic and comedic scenes where Cyrano's poetic words win Roxane's heart, all while she believes it is Christian who is the true author.

As the story unfolds, Cyrano's love for Roxane grows deeper, but he keeps his feelings hidden, sacrificing his own happiness for hers. Tragedy strikes when Christian dies in battle, and before his death, Cyrano confesses to Roxane that it was he who wrote the letters all along. Roxane realizes too late that she has loved Cyrano for his soul and not his appearance. The play concludes with Cyrano's poignant death, his unrequited love for Roxane remaining his secret until the end.
